Hand-scissored, not clipper-finished

There is a real and visible difference between a dog that has been clipped and a dog that has been scissor-finished, and it is the reason most of our Bal Harbour clients came to us in the first place.

A clipper leaves a uniform machine-cut length. Fast, and fine for many coats. Hand-scissoring shapes the coat in relation to the dog's actual structure — softening the topline, rounding the head correctly, balancing leg columns, and blending transitions so there is no visible line where one length becomes another. It takes considerably longer, and it is what separates a tidy dog from a beautifully groomed one.

Cuts we are asked for most in Bal Harbour

  • Asian Fusion. Rounded face, full plush legs, shorter body. Exacting work on Poodles, Bichons and doodles — and very easy to get wrong.
  • Teddy bear cut. Soft, even, rounded head with a short uniform body. The most requested small-dog cut we do.
  • Breed-standard trims. Correct Schnauzer furnishings, proper Cocker skirt, traditional Poodle patterns.
  • Lion cut. Full mane, close body, tail plume. Bold, and it needs precise blending to look deliberate rather than accidental.

Haulover and the salt problem

Bal Harbour sits directly beside Haulover Beach, one of the few genuinely dog-friendly stretches of sand in Miami-Dade, and a great many of our clients here are there every weekend.

Salt water is unkind to a scissored coat in particular. It dries the hair shaft, roughens the texture, and makes a precise cut lose its shape faster than it should. If your dog is a Haulover regular, tell us when you book — we build in a long fresh-water pre-rinse before any shampoo and a heavier conditioning treatment to protect the coat texture the cut depends on.

For scissored coats we recommend every 4 weeks. Precision work grows out visibly. Past six weeks you are not maintaining a shape any more, you are rebuilding it.

Bal Harbour and Surfside pricing

Standard grooming is priced by size below. Full hand-scissored styling is quoted individually, because the time it takes depends entirely on coat density and the cut — we would rather quote you honestly than advertise a low number and adjust it at pick-up.

Bal Harbour dog grooming — frequently asked questions

Do you do Asian Fusion and teddy bear cuts?
Yes, both are among the cuts we are asked for most in Bal Harbour. Asian Fusion in particular is exacting work — rounded face, full plush legs, shorter body — and it is very easy to get wrong. Bring a reference photo on your first visit and we will document the exact proportions so it is repeatable every time.
What is the difference between a scissor cut and a clipper cut?
A clipper leaves a uniform machine-cut length across the coat. Hand-scissoring shapes the coat to your dog's actual structure — softening the topline, rounding the head correctly, balancing the legs and blending transitions so there is no visible line where one length becomes another. It takes considerably longer, which is why it is quoted individually rather than by size.
How often should a scissored coat be groomed?
Every four weeks. Precision scissor work grows out visibly, and past about six weeks you are no longer maintaining the shape — the groomer has to rebuild it from scratch, which costs more and gives a less consistent result over time.
We take our dog to Haulover Beach most weekends. Does that matter?
It matters quite a lot for a scissored coat. Salt water dries the hair shaft and roughens the texture, so a precise cut loses its shape faster than it should. Mention it when you book and we will add a long fresh-water pre-rinse before shampoo and a heavier conditioning treatment to protect the coat texture your cut depends on.
