North Miami Beach is a house-and-yard city, and that changes everything about a dog's coat. Where our Aventura clients bring us condo dogs that go outside four times a day on a leash, NMB dogs are outside for hours — digging in the yard, swimming, rolling in grass and picking up every burr and seed in the neighbourhood.

That means the two services we perform most often here are not haircuts at all. They are de-shedding and de-matting.

Why South Florida yards are hard on coats

• Year-round shedding. Without a real winter, double-coated dogs never get a clean seasonal blow-out. They shed constantly instead, and dead undercoat packs down into the live coat.
• Humidity plus damp grass. A coat that never fully dries at the skin is how hot spots and that persistent "wet dog" smell start.
• Sandspurs and grass seed. They work into leg feathering and between paw pads, then tighten into painful mats.

Our de-shedding treatment removes the packed undercoat with a high-velocity dryer and undercoat rake rather than shaving it off — shaving a double coat is the single most common grooming mistake we correct, and it can permanently damage how the coat regrows.

Honest de-matting policy

Severe matting is not a cosmetic problem. Tight mats pull constantly at the skin, trap moisture against it, hide sores, and cut off circulation to ears and tails.

We will always tell you the truth about your dog's coat. If a mat can be safely brushed out, we brush it out and show you how to keep it from coming back. If the matting is too tight or too close to the skin, humane practice is a short clip — and we will explain exactly why before we touch a single clipper, never after.
